SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — An acting chief has been named to head the state parks system while Gov. Jerry Brown's administration searches for a permanent director.

Resources Agency Secretary John Laird announced Thursday that he appointed Lisa Mangat to lead the California Department of Parks and Recreation. She had been special assistant to the state parks director since October.

She replaces Anthony Jackson, a retired Marine Corps major general who resigned in May after just 18 months on the job.

Brown appointed Jackson in November 2012 after the previous director resigned following disclosures that the department kept $54 million hidden in two special funds for more than a decade.

Mangat previously worked for the Department of Finance, the Legislative Analyst's Office and as a consultant with the Legislature. Her salary was not immediately disclosed.
