A viewer from Sparks wrote in with a question about gun buy back programs and why they're not in use here.
Gun buy back programs are popular in many areas .
We ran a story last week as a matter of fact about a buy back program in Los Angeles. The city says the response was overwhelming. They collected more than 2,000 firearms, including 75 assault weapons and two rocket launchers in the one day effort.
Typically the way it works is people bring in their guns and the city or county pays them in cash or gift cards for bringing the guns in.
So what about here ?
I checked with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Mike Haley says they are not in the business of
supporting gun buy back programs and they don't have the revenue to do it. Haley says he thinks gun buy back programs are political theater, in his words, with very little real positive consequence.
Also, since our viewer lives in Sparks I checked with Sparks Police Chief Steve Keefer.
He says someone suggested the idea recently and he supports it, so they're doing some research to find out if its feasible and what it would take to make it happen.
So you may see a gun buy back program in Sparks. We'll let you know when we hear more.
