Kathy Madden-Bentle wrote in asking how many people have to be killed before the speed limit between Moundhouse and Silver Springs is lowered to 55 or 60 miles per hour ?
I checked with Meg Ragonese at the Nevada Department of Transportation. She says they have done traffic studies on that stretch of highway 50 between Moundhouse and Silver Springs. What they found is the average speed people drive along that stretch is 65 miles per hour, and that is the posted speed limit. They also checked and found since 2007 there have been 10 fatalities on that stretch of highway 50 between Dayton and Silver Springs. Ragonese says while that may sound like a lot it is not an unusual number. NDOT will continue to conduct traffic studies in that area to monitor the situation but for now they do not believe there's a need to lower the speed limit.
