Gary Kotler wrote in asking if we could find out what all the new underground cable laying along 395 from Carson City to Topaz is for ?

I checked with Scott Magruder over at  NDOT about this, since that construction is happening along the highway.
Magruder says two private companies are involved laying several hundred miles of fiber optic cable.   This is part of an effort to bring high speed internet and phone service to more parts of California and Nevada.  This project stretches from Barstow California , through Nevada and all the way up into northern California. That's about 500 miles all told.
Since it is such a major project it's going to take a while and Magruder says they will probably be working in the Minden-Gardnerville area through the summer.
NDOT's role in case you're wondering is simply to facilitate the work and provide flaggers if there are any major traffic delays expected.  NDOT owns the property adjacent the roadway, what are known as right of ways, and the work is being done on those right of ways so that private landowners don't have to be bothered.
