Larry Wilson called up this week and asked me why Sparks Firefighters are allowed to drive a city fire truck to the grocery store?
I checked with Adam Mayberry with the city of Sparks about this.
Mayberry says the fire department employees typically do not make a special trip to the store. They are either running to the station from an emergency call, training or other event.
Also he says when they are at a grocery store, many times they use the opportunity to promote public education about the fire department.
Mayberry says many public agencies also allow their employees to go to the grocery store using their government vehicles.
For the city of Sparks they view it as an acceptable practice for firefighters who often work 24 hour shifts and have no choice but to do their grocery shopping while they're on the clock.
