SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Zoo says a newborn gorilla being treated for pneumonia is showing great improvement.
Park officials say Wednesday that the 8-day-old female has finished her antibiotic treatment. She's also gulping milk formula, breathing on her own without the need of oxygen — and she's been growing more hair.
Nadine Lamberski, associate director of veterinary services at the park, says the unnamed gorilla is now developing quickly and normally.
The gorilla was born March 12 by cesarean section at the zoo's Safari Park. She underwent surgery last Friday for a collapsed lung. It's unclear whether she contracted pneumonia before or after birth.
