LAS VEGAS (AP) — A bee attack has killed one Las Vegas Metro police dog and injured two others.

Police say the attack occurred Tuesday morning in kennels outside the home of their handler, Officer Mel English, who also was bitten.

Micky, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, died after being bitten the most by the swarm of bees. He was a police dog for nearly nine years before retiring in March.

Two other active police dogs also were injured and were being cared for by a veterinarian. They're expected to fully recover.

English, who has been assigned to Las Vegas Metro's K-9 unit since 1997, suffered bites to his lips, hands and legs.

But he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that his injuries were "not that big of a deal."

Sorry Kramer aka "Mr. Know It All" they are not deer flies, the ones I am talking about are black and yellow striped bees with no stingers. Go camping, try cooking at the campsite, the BEES that are trying to get into the food at MEAT EATER Bees, not a fly among them unless they are eating it. They are a carnivore version of what might resemble a yellow jacket but no stinger and no relation to any fly. Obviously not a long timer to the NO. Nevada/No. Calif area.

they aren't bees; I've been bitten by one and still have the little wound; they're deerflies. Vegas attack likely was by killer bees -from Brazil.

Duh to you. There are biting bees in Nevada and No. California. They are referred to as "Meat Eaters", they only bite, it is a nasty bite, they take the skin with them and leave a toxin that causese severe itching for weeks. Dogs are unfortunate prey, these bees are angry and swarm when there is any meat in their area, live or dead.
