Cleveland, OH ( - New York Yankees slugger Carlos Beltran was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's 5-4, 14-inning win over the Indians after he broke his nose in two places during batting practice.

Beltran hit a ball that caromed off the metal part of the screen in front of the pitcher's mound. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said it's unknown how long he would be sidelined.

"It's a freak, freak injury," Girardi said. "You can only change the lineup so many times and then you run out of people. I have to figure out what we're going to do."

Beltran hadn't played the previous two contests due to inflammation in his right knee. He is just 2-for-15 on the current road trip and is hitting .216 with nine home runs and 28 RBI in 61 games this season.

The injuries are starting to pile up for the Yankees. Earlier Wednesday, they placed staff ace Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list due to an ailing right elbow. He's on his way to Seattle to see an orthopedic specialist.

Outfielder Brett Gardner was held out of the lineup with an abdominal strain.
