Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays have designated pitcher Esmil Rogers for assignment.

Rogers appeared in 16 games out of the bullpen for the Blue Jays this season and struggled to an ERA of 6.97. He allowed 28 hits and 17 runs -- 16 earned -- in just 20 2/3 innings.

The 28-year-old right-hander has a career record of 16-21 with a 5.59 ERA in 174 games, including 42 starts, with Colorado, Cleveland and Toronto.

Toronto made the move to open a roster spot for pitcher Liam Hendriks, who had his contract purchased after posting a record of 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA in 10 games for Triple-A Buffalo.

The 25-year-old right-hander, scheduled to start Friday against Oakland, previously pitched in the majors with Minnesota. He has a big league mark of 2-13 with a 6.06 ERA in 30 games, all but two as a starter.
