RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say they have found a body near the area where a swimmer went missing in a rocky ocean cove in Southern California.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Amber Smith said Sunday that a body was found shortly after 11 a.m. after days of searching but authorities had not immediately identified it as the missing swimmer.

The discovery was reported earlier Sunday by the Los Angeles Times.

Friends of Joseph Sanchez told authorities they were jumping into the churning water Wednesday afternoon in Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes when he started yelling for help. The water was too rough for them to reach him.

Authorities say lifeguards have made more than 50 rescues this month in the area known for dangerous waves and riptides.
