DETROIT (AP) — The Marines are awarding a posthumous Bronze Star for heroism to a 23-year-old lance corporal from Detroit who died in combat in Afghanistan.
Steven Stevens II died June 22, 2012. The Marine Corps says he was guiding his squad through enemy fire in Helmand province when he was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.
In a statement, the Marine Corps says that Stevens displayed "uncommon courage and selflessness for his fellow Marines."
Lt. Gen. John A. Toolan is presenting the Bronze Star to Stevens' widow Monique Stevens on Monday at Camp Pendleton, California.
Steven Stevens never met his son Kairo, who was born eight days after his father's deployment. The 2-year-old also is attending the ceremony.
