APTOS, Calif. (AP) — A California Highway Patrol officer swerved to avoid a deer on Highway 1 and slammed into a median guard rail, destroying the CHP cruiser.

Investigators says the officer and his partner were traveling north on the highway near Aptos early Sunday when a deer darted into the highway.

The cruiser went spinning into the center divider.

No other vehicles were involved.

The Monterey Herald (http://bit.ly/Sonuuf ) says a CHP in the passenger seat was taken to a hospital for examination and was released. The driver wasn't hurt.
