MORENO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an empty school bus rolled backward and hit a young girl outside a Riverside County elementary school and left her seriously injured.

California Highway Patrol Sgt. Brian Gonsalves tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://bit.ly/YkSMX0) that the girl who is about five years old was hit shortly after classes ended Monday at Box Springs Elementary School in Moreno Valley.

Gonsalves says the bus was in a parking lot and rolled back on to the girl who was standing on the sidewalk behind it. He gave no details on her injuries beyond calling them serious.

It's not clear why the bus rolled back or how it came to a stop soon after.

The school has about 500 kindergarten-through-fifth-grade students.
