SAN DIEGO (AP) — An 85-year-old man has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for fatally shooting his estranged wife in San Diego's bustling Gaslamp Quarter.
Joseph Gotell was sentenced Friday after being convicted last month of first-degree murder and gun charges. Gotell shot his spouse, Deborah, twice in the head and once in the arm in broad daylight two years ago.
Judge Peter Deddeh said the 57-year-old victim tried to leave Gotell but he continued to stalk her. Three of the victim's daughters have described their stepfather as abusive and controlling.
The couple had been married about five years.
Gotell's defense lawyer, Kathleen Lee, argued her client suffered from dementia and was not fully in control of his actions.
