VICTORVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Southern California school officials say a high school security guard suffered a heart attack and died after he helped break up a fight between two students.

Djuan "DJ" Kelly complained of shortness of breath and chest pain before collapsing Monday near the campus of Victor Valley High School in San Bernardino County, according to District Superintendent Elvin Momon. Paramedics treated the 53-year-old Kelly at the scene before rushing him to a hospital, where he died.

Momon tells the Victorville Daily Press that he is not aware of all of the factors involved in the student altercation but that "it wasn't anything serious."

Kelly had worked at the school since 2000. Momon says Kelly was well-liked and called his death a "big loss" to the district.

Kelly is survived by a wife and three children.
