FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California man who was freed from a life sentence last year is back in jail.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise says Raymond Ramirez was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly knocked down an 18-year-old woman who was walking home from a party. Police say he sexually assaulted the woman and fled with her cellphone when she screamed.
Police say the phone was found at his home and he was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and armed robbery. He remained jailed Tuesday.
The 53-year-old Fontana man was sent to prison for life in 1997 under the state's three-strikes law for committing a third felony but he was released in 2013 after voters changed the law to require that the third strike be serious or violent.©2014 Associated Press.
