SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a statewide sting aimed at unlicensed contractors has snared 97 people who may now face criminal charges.

The Contractors State License Board said Friday that investigators posed as homeowners seeking bids for home improvements.

Ninety-four of those who responded may now face misdemeanor charges for contracting without a license.

The other three were taken to jail. One of the three was on probation for previous violations. Another was arrested for felony possession of narcotics. And the third for felony forgery charges.

Those caught in the sting included four sex offenders, three other suspects with active arrest warrants and three others on probation.

In all, 14 stings were held in El Dorado, Kern, Los Angeles, Merced, Placer, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Luis Obispo counties.
