Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Vancouver Canucks have named Jim Benning their new general manager.

The 51-year-old Benning served as the assistant GM of the Boston Bruins the past seven seasons. He replaces Mike Gillis, who was axed as president and GM on April 8.

The Canucks then ousted coach John Tortorella on May 1 following a 36-35-11 season.

"Jim brings a wealth of hockey experience as a builder and talent evaluator that will benefit this team for years to come," said Cancuks president of hockey operations Trevor Linden. "We are aligned on how we want to build this team and Jim's level of commitment to building a championship team is exciting."

A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Benning also had a job with the Buffalo Sabres for 12 years. For eight of those seasons, he was the team's director of amateur scouting.

Benning also played nine seasons in the NHL for Toronto and Vancouver.
