LAS VEGAS (AP) — Conspiracy and graffiti charges have been wiped away for four protesters who wrote anti-police messages in chalk outside Las Vegas police headquarters and a courthouse.
Prosecutor Christopher Lalli cited new evidence, and Justice of the Peace Cynthia Cruz agreed Friday to kill the case.
Her order prevents prosecutors from refiling charges against Kelly Wayne Patterson, Brian Ballentine, Hailee Jewell and Catalino de la Cruz Dazo Jr.
District Attorney Steve Wolfson had said he learned after filing charges Aug. 15 that officials directed protesters to a spot on the sidewalk where they wrote messages critical of police in July.
The case caused an uproar, and defense attorney Robert Langford says he plans to sue for malicious prosecution of the four adults and a 17-year-old who was arrested but wasn't charged.
