Brooklyn, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Joey Chestnut won his eighth straight Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on Friday at Coney Island.
Chestnut, who proposed to girlfriend Neslie Ricasa on the stage about an hour before the start of the contest, finished with 61 hot dogs eaten. It was short of the record of 69 he set last year.
In wet conditions on the boardwalk during the annual Fourth of July event, Chestnut and Matt Stonie battled down to the wire in the 10-minute time frame. The two were constantly within one hot dog of each other until Chestnut, nicknamed "Jaws," pulled away in the final minute to retain the Mustard Yellow International Belt.
Stonie ate 56 hot dogs to finish as the runner-up for the second consecutive year.
Miki Sudo ate 34 hot dogs to win the women's division. She beat Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, the three-time defending champ who ate 27 3/4.
