LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard in Southern California is searching for three people believed to be stranded on a disabled 17-foot boat headed from Catalina Island to Rancho Palos Verdes.

Lt. Michael Turanitza says Monday morning that the Coast Guard got a 911 call from the boaters after 8 p.m. Sunday saying the engine died, but their phone battery died during the call.

He says the boat doesn't have flares, a radio or a global positioning system, making the search more complicated.

Boats from the Coast Guard and Baywatch, along with helicopters from Los Angeles and San Diego are assisting in the search.
