CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Assembly has appointed a select committee to investigate troubled Assemblyman Steven Brooks to determine whether he is fit to serve in the Legislature.

The panel will hold hearings and recommend what action, if any, should be taken against the North Las Vegas Democrat. The committee could recommend expulsion.

Formation of the committee Thursday comes a day after Brooks was ousted from the Assembly Democratic caucus.

Brooks has been under scrutiny since his Jan. 19 arrest over threats he is accused of making against Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick. He was hospitalized a week later for a psychiatric evaluation.

Brooks was sworn in Monday with other legislators. He backed out of an agreement with leadership to take medical leave, saying he is ready to serve.
