Coyotes provide update on G Smith

Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith isn't likely to miss a significant chunk of time with an injury he suffered earlier this week.

Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said on Saturday, hours before his club was set to host the Minnesota Wild, that Smith's lower-body issue -- suspected to be to his right leg -- isn't as serious as first thought. He will be re- evaluated in a week's time.

Smith was helped off the ice late in the third period of Monday's 4-3 overtime loss against the Rangers after an opposing player fell on top of him in the crease.

Smith grabbed at his right leg after bending awkwardly under New York's Derick Brassard, who was nudged into the goaltender by Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris as the two fought for position in front.

Thomas Greiss has filled in as starter since then.
