REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) — A grand jury has returned indictments against 16 people who authorities say have ties to violent gangs that are responsible for crimes around the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Mateo County prosecutors announced the indictments on Monday. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that nine of the defendants are charged with murder with special circumstances in connection with four slayings in 2012 and 2013.

Prosecutors say all 16 defendants are members or associates of Sac Street, Da Vill and the Taliban, gangs with ties to East Palo Alto. Sac Street and Da Vill have allegedly united against the Taliban in recent years, and prosecutors say much of the violence was retaliatory.

The indictments were based on a yearlong investigation that included search warrants and a court-ordered wiretap.
