LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony says he withhold a list of altar boys from police who were seeking more victims of a molester priest because the altar servers were too old to be among the priest's victims.
In a deposition transcript unsealed Wednesday, Mahony also said he didn't want the police inquiry to create a "negative effect" among the altar servers.
The deposition was unsealed after the archdiocese agreed to a $13 million settlement with 17 victims.
Eleven of them were abused by a visiting Mexican priest name Nicolas Aguilar Rivera in 1987.
The LAPD ultimately obtained the list from families at the two parishes where Aguilar Rivera worked.
Police found that Aguilar Rivera abused 26 children during his 10 months in LA.
All but one was an altar boy.
