ELKO, Nev. (AP) -- The Elko City Council is putting off a decision on whether to establish rules governing medical marijuana dispensaries.

Police Chief Ben Reed, Elko County Sheriff Jim Pitts and Assemblyman John Ellison were among those who urged the council on Tuesday to amend city zoning ordinances so as to outlaw medical marijuana outlets.

Instead, Councilman John Patrick Rice directed staff to bring back information on the potential impact of a yearlong moratorium on medical pot sales. He says that would give the council a chance to examine more closely the effects in other Nevada counties.

The Elko Daily Free Press wants a vote on a moratorium before the new state regulations take affect April 1.
