ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Elko police are warning residents about an impostor posing as a lawyer as part of a telephone scam in the area.

Police say the man claims to be an attorney who tells potential victims that a family member has been arrested and jailed, and needs money for bail or legal fees.

Investigators say the suspect appears to be preying on the elderly and claims that a grandchild needs the money, often requesting thousands of dollars. Police say he sounds legit because he provides the valid name of a lawyer and a law firm.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that in some cases, the scammer has a partner get on the phone to play the role of a grandchild who talks to the targeted victim.

An investigation is underway.
