SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The search for missing victims of the so-called "Speed Freak Killers" has ended without success at the bottom of abandoned well in remote Northern California.

The FBI announced Thursday it had finished a weeks-long excavation of the well outside Stockton, Calif. without finding human remains. The well is 200 yards from another site where investigators last year found the remains of three women and a fetus thought to be the victims of Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog.

The two men were convicted of multiple murders after their 1999 arrests.

In August, Shermantine was briefly removed from his death row cell and led investigators to several sites in San Joaquin County where he said victims were buried. He has since told several media outlets that investigators were digging up the wrong well.
