SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Neighbors and relatives are mourning the loss of a 10-year-old girl who died in a Treasure Island apartment fire over the weekend.

KGO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/W0pgaq) Corlina Godfrey died after being trapped inside her family's second-floor apartment. The community gathered for a vigil Sunday evening, as stuffed animals, balloons and flowers continued to mount in her memory in front of the charred remains of her family's home.

San Francisco fire officials say when firefighters arrived at the complex around 12:15 a.m. Saturday they found flames roaring out of the two-story building.

Fire Department Deputy Chief of Operations Mark Gonzalez says firefighters tried to rescue the girl, but could not get to her. Four other family members escaped unharmed.

The American Red Cross says the fire displaced 22 people, including eleven children.
