LOS ANGELES (AP) — The National Parks Service is recommending protections and improved management of parts of Southern California's San Gabriel River and San Gabriel Mountains.
Final recommendations released Wednesday call on Congress to designate a National Recreation Area for the river from the Angeles National Forest to Santa Fe Springs and for a swath of the San Gabriel Mountains' foothills.
In 2003, Congress authorized study on how to protect local natural resources and improve local recreation opportunities.
The Angeles National Forest forms a northern border for parts of Los Angeles County's intense urbanization.
The designation could bring more resources the U.S. Forest Service. They were sued by environmentalists in years past for failing to protect habitats for sensitive animals and plants.
Congress will decide the details on the proposed changes.
