FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Fresno is being sued by a group who claims the city did not perform a legally required environmental study before granting a new contract for trash collection.

Fresnans for Clean Air filed its lawsuit Tuesday in Fresno County Superior Court, challenging the City Council's quick approval of a garbage contract with Mid Valley Disposal.

The Fresno Bee reports that the suit claims the city did not adequately determine whether Mid Valley Disposal's trash collection methods would cause significant environmental harm, as required by state law.

Under the deal, the company would pay financially struggling Fresno a $1.5 million signing bonus and $2.5 million a year. The city is currently looking at a $5 million budget gap.

City officials said they believe the Mid Valley deal is legal.
