WASHINGTON (AP) — New campaign ads claim the Democratic governor of Colorado is soft on a convicted killer and the Democrats' hopeful in Maine would dole out millions in tax dollars to immigrants in the country illegally.

The Republican Governors Association started running the highly emotional ads Tuesday. It's part of the group's advertising blitz between now and Election Day.

One of the ads is against Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a first-term Democrat who is in a tight race against former Rep. Bob Beauprez. Hickenlooper has put on pause the execution of a convicted killer while he is in office.

The other ad is against Rep. Mike Michaud, who is challenging first-term Gov. Paul LePage.

Spokesmen for both Democrats called the ads a distortion of their candidates' views.
