Mulhouse, France (SportsNetwork.com) - A Frenchman will don the coveted yellow jersey on Bastille Day.

Tony Gallopin is the new overall leader of the Tour de France after Sunday's Stage 9, a 170-kilometer trek from Gerardmer to Mulhouse.

German Tony Martin won the stage with a dominating performance. He broke ahead early and cruised comfortably to the finish line, crossing in a time of 4 hours, 9 minutes and 34 seconds.

"I never had a lack of power. It was hard to ride solo but I never got out of my comfort zone," Martin said.

Gallopin was in a group of 18 riders who finished 2:45 behind Martin.

"I've made it! Gallopin said. "I was thinking about taking the yellow jersey since the cobbled stage, nevertheless, what I feel is indescribable. When I was a kid, I couldn't dream of taking the yellow jersey because I was getting dropped at all the races I took part in. Today, I knew there might be an opportunity, so I didn't want to miss the breakaway. I jumped in all the attacks."

Italian Vincenzo Nibali had worn yellow since winning Stage 2. He was 7:46 off Martin's pace and is now second overall, 1:34 behind Gallopin.

Two-time Tour winner Alberto Contador is 4:08 behind Gallopin in ninth place after being credited with the same time as Nibali on Sunday.

The stage featured six climbs, including a Category 1 ascent up Le Markstein near the end, and concluded with a downhill finish.

Monday's 10th stage on Bastille Day includes seven climbs, four of which are of the Category 1 variety, before the first rest day on Tuesday.
