Normal, IL (Sports Network) - First-year Indiana State football coach Mike Sanford announced Monday the hiring of former University of Colorado assistant Brian Cabral as the Sycamores' new associate head coach and defensive coordinator.

Cabral recently completed his 24th season at Colorado, including his 23rd as a full-time assistant coach. During his tenure, Cabral held various titles, including twice as interim head coach as well as associate head coach and assistant head coach.

His speciality is linebackers.

"Brian Cabral brings tremendous experience and expertise to our staff," Sanford said. "He will be a great addition from a defensive scheme standpoint, but most of all for his ability to develop players and bring out the best in them."

Cabral, a 56-year-old native of Hawaii, played linebacker at Colorado before graduating in 1978. He was a nine-year NFL veteran with Atlanta Green Bay and Chicago, and served as the Bears' special teams captain on their Super Bowl XX championship team in 1985.

Sanford has inherited an Indiana State squad coming off a 7-4 season, including 5-3 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
