FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) — The Sacramento County Coroner's office has identified the infant who was stabbed along with his mother before the suspect was shot and killed by police.
Roberto Varela was set to turn six months old before he died from his stab wounds on Thursday afternoon. Folsom police say the boy was attacked by a man who also stabbed the infant's mother.
The mother was the suspect's aunt. She was in critical condition.
Police tell the Sacramento Bee an officer responding to reports of a stabbing encountered the suspect outside an apartment building and shot him as he brandished a knife. The man, who is in his 20s, died en route to the hospital.
Neither he nor the infant's mother has been identified. Police were working to determine what led to the stabbings.
