The Desert Research Institute is searching for a Business Development Lead.

DRI is an environmental sciences research organization within the Nevada System of Higher Education. DRI is seeking a Business Development Lead to support the newly launched Applied Innovation Center in Advanced Analytics (AIC), which is focused on increasing efforts in the areas of data intensive computing, high performance computing, and visualization. The individual will be responsible for business development and for rapidly expanding DRI's contracts with business with private industry and will report to the Vice President for Research. The ideal candidate has a proven record of successful business development in science and technology, understands the process of commercializing new technologies in an academic environment, and possesses strong networking skills with private sector businesses. Pre-existing business experience in Nevada and the western United States is a significant benefit.

  • Identify market opportunities and subsequently match the needs of the private sector with services/solutions based on: core competencies based on DRI's research expertise in atmospheric, hydrologic, earth and ecosystem sciences, and new strategic directions at DRI in advanced computing, data analytics, cyber-physical automation and advanced visualization
  • Identify and contact customers
  • Grow DRI's revenue from private sector research and technology development
  • Participate in developing AIC strategy and produce market and competitive analysis to provide guidance on program and project opportunities for DRI
  • Negotiate business deals and contracts on behalf of DRI involving custom and packaged solutions, potentially involving external expertise
  • Provide guidance on asset development, intellectual property generation, commercialization, licensing, and market adoption
  • Play a major role in pricing, negotiating and contracting solutions in collaboration with DRI researchers
  • Plan, arrange and execute client briefings and ideation sessions
  • Develop and facilitate partnerships with faculty and researcher, institute partners
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in business, marketing, or communication
  • At least 8 years of a successful record of business development activities
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills linked to successful marketing and communication programs
  • Strong business acumen and judgment for identifying, evaluating, developing, and closing business deals and contracts
  • Ability to network and develop strong business relationships with clients
  • Broad range of subject matter expertise in the technology and implementation of data analytics and computing
  • Ability to travel and meet with clients
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiation, contract development, project scoping and budget development
Preferred Qualifications:
  • MBA or other business related master's degree
  • Academic degree in a technical/scientific discipline
  • Experience with Nevada business and industry
  • Experience in DRI's core research areas in environmental science
  • Understanding of academic approach to research and development
