RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - On Monday October 21st a 12 year-old brought a gun to Sparks Middle School, he shot three and then himself. There are still many unanswered questions about the incident. In an interview with the parents of the shooter News 4 tried to answer some of them, including questioning the father about a child abuse charge.
The gunman, Jose Reyes was a victim of child abuse by his own father more than a year before the shooting. Court documents show the father, Jose Reyes-Mandujano, was arrested in January 2012 after he “lost control of himself” and hit his son two or three times. His son, Jose junior, suffered a black eye. The father was arrested on a felony charge of child abuse and a misdemeanor battery charge. The battery charge was later dismissed and he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor after the felony charge was reduced.
We asked both the Sparks Police Department and the Washoe County District Attorney to comment on the child abuse case. They both denied comment because the current investigation into the Sparks Middle School shooting is still underway.
