RENO, Nev. (AP) — A judge in Washoe County has issued a preliminary injunction that temporarily halts the layoff of 32 Reno firefighters.

Judge Lidia Stiglich said in a ruling late Monday she wants to "preserve the status quo" while an ongoing labor dispute between the city and the firefighters' union is pending before the Nevada Employee-Management Relations Board.

She said if the dispute ends in the favor of the union, the firefighters will "suffer irreparable harm." She said that simply paying them back pay would not fully compensate them for emotional damages, stress and loss of health care.

She also ordered the union to post a $10,000 bond to cover city costs if they end up losing their legal challenge.
