RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Local school kids are going to get an extra dose of the fresh outdoors Wednesday. The Washoe County School District is celebrating the fourth annual Nevada Moves Day.

Nevada Moves Day is designed to remind parents and children of the simple things like walking or biking to school and enjoying a healthy life-style.

More than 110 schools across the state are participating in Nevada Moves Day.

24 of those schools are from Washoe County School District.

Each school has quite the day full of activities lined up including: community clean ups, field days, jog-a-thons, fun runs, circuit training, and after school Olympics.

All in an effort to encourage kids to participate in more physical activity, because we know when children adopt healthy habits early on they are more likely to make them lifelong habits.

Nevada Moves Day is also an opportunity to help children learn more about pedestrian and bike safety.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation walking or biking to school can lessen up to 25% of morning rush hour traffic from students being driven to school.

A reminder to drivers, keep an eye out for students walking and biking Wednesday. Be mindful there will be more students out than normal and know when to reduce your speed around school zones.
