LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fire investigators say a blaze that destroyed a 19th century wooden church in South Los Angeles, injuring three firefighters, was accidental.
Fire spokesman Brian Humphrey made the confirmation Wednesday about the blaze at Crouch Memorial Church of God in Christ. Pastor Lawrence McGee said he turned on a wall heater Tuesday morning to see if it was working and smoke came out of the vent.
The fire spread through the attic and partially collapsed the roof. Two firefighters were reported shortly thereafter but were later found with minor injuries. A third firefighter also was injured.
The church, built in 1895, was the center of the prohibition movement in the early 1900s. McGee says he expects the church to be rebuilt.
