LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's civilian monitor says his office will review what went wrong when an innocent bystander was shot to death at his home by a deputy trying to rescue the man's wife from an armed intruder.

Sheriff's officials say Frank Mendoza of Pico Rivera was killed Friday when the deputy mistook him for the armed parolee.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Inspector General Max Huntsman's office will look into whether better training or a change in tactics is needed to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

Mendoza, 54, was shot when he ran out of his house moments after deputies exchanged gunfire with 24-year-old Cedric Ramirez, who had broken into the home.

Ramirez was killed and Mendoza's wife rescued.
