Reno, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV)- A 16 year old teenager is behind bars after police say he carried a loaded semi-automatic weapon on campus at Hug High School. Washoe County School District Police Chief Mike Mieras says it was students at Hug High School who first notified a campus police officer.

According to Mieras, the teenager has never been a student at Hug High School and is not currently enrolled in the Washoe County School District.  He says the teenager was a student in the district one or two years ago.

Police found the teenager, who has been described as a black male, a short distance from the school.  When they located the suspect he was no longer carrying a gun.  Police found a semi-automatic gun in a dumpster nearby.

The teen was taken to Jan Evans detention center and faces multiple charges including possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds and obstructing a police officer.

Police say the teen has not been cooperative and they are still not sure why he was on campus in the first place.  An investigation is underway.

During the search another teen matching the description of the suspect was also detained.  He was carrying a bb gun but was not on school grounds and was eventually released.
