LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles International Airport is expanding again.

Airport commissioners approved the first phase of a new terminal that eventually will add up to 29 new gates, built with wide-bodies jets in mind.

Plans for the initial stage envision a building with 11 gates and a "people mover" to take passengers from the satellite terminal to the airport's main areas.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the contract for building the $900 million project is scheduled to be awarded in January. A price tag and schedule for subsequent phases of the terminal have not been determined.

The project is part of the airport's ongoing, multibillion-dollar expansion and renovation. Airport commissioners approved the spending at their meeting Monday.
