Los Angeles Sheriff's deputy shot, suspect dead

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say a deputy has been shot and a suspect is dead following a confrontation in Long Beach.

Sheriff's officials say the deputy was shot in his stomach Monday morning near Long Beach Boulevard, just south of Compton and about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Officials say the condition of the deputy is in unknown as he was rushed into surgery at Saint Francis Medical Center. The deputy was from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's station in Compton.

A suspect involved in the confrontation died at the scene.

The names of the deputy and the suspect have not been released.
