LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities in Las Vegas say a 72-year-old man called 911, reported people were breaking into his home, and fired a handgun before police arrived to find a person dead in his backyard.

Police arriving a little before 8 a.m. Monday arrested one suspect in a vehicle that crashed into a patrol car outside the home in northwest Las Vegas. His name wasn't immediately made public.

Officer Bill Cassell says another would-be intruder fled on foot and wasn't immediately found.

Cassell says the 27-year-old man found dead in the backyard had a gun, but it wasn't immediately clear if he was shot by the homeowner.

Cassell says the homeowner may not face criminal charges. He wasn't identified by police.

Police say his home was burglarized before within the last several weeks.
