YERINGTON, Nev. (AP) — The company that brought gold and silver mining back to the historic Comstock Lode around Virginia City has failed to clear a hurdle in its bid for a land-use change in Silver City.

The Lyon County Planning Commission voted 5-1 to recommend denial of Comstock Mining Inc.'s request to change the master plan for a 94-acre parcel on the south end of Silver City.

An automatic appeal goes to county commissioners, who will take final action on the company's request to change the county's master plan and zoning for the parcel.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the planning commission took the action Tuesday after about four hours of public comment both in favor and support of the request.

Opponents — mainly Silver City residents — said while they were not anti-mining, they did not believe the Comstock Mining property targeted for the land-use change is an appropriate area for mining because of its proximity to homes.

Supporters said the request would have a positive economic development impact on the county.
