ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A Moldovan man has admitted to taking part in an Internet scheme that duped potential automobile buyers out of thousands of dollars.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says 27-year-old Dumitru Doban pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy Thursday in federal court in Rochester.

Prosecutors say Doban, a citizen of Moldova, was part of a group that posted vehicles for sale online and collected payments through bogus websites.

Authorities say 18 people from New York, California, Nevada, North Carolina, Arizona and Canada sent a total of $257,000 in payments but never received vehicles.

Charges against a second Moldovan man are pending.

Doban faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced in April.
