LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's largest utility wants to charge an extra fee to those customers who don't want the new smart meters.

NV Energy officials have prepared a draft order to present to the state Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday to establish the alternative system for the estimated 10,000 customers who want to opt out of the new technology.

The Las Vegas Sun reports that in southern Nevada, it would cost $98 to install the alternative meter plus a monthly fee of $9. In northern Nevada, installation would cost $107 with a $10 monthly fee.

NV Energy has installed about 1.3 million smart meters, which can transmit meter-reading data directly from a home or business to the utility.

Some customers critical of the meters fear they might cause health hazards or invade their privacy.

#1 they're not a health hazard. There's no radioactive stuff in the meters. #2 they have to get the meter readers to relocate into the building where all of the information goes. No more walking. The people who have the meters already aren't paying a dime for the new fandangled meter outside their house. As a matter of a fact for some strange reason our utility costs have gone down. Just don't be growing things that you're not supposed to be growing. You don't have to have a smart meter for them to figure out what you're doing.

Now ain't that some happy horse s**t!!! They charge you to put it in & use and they want to charge you for NOT using it!!! Don't eliminate meter reader jobs too!! This is getting ridiculous!!! I'm a renter and I sure don't want to be an easy statistic to anyone or anything!!! More invasion of privacy!! Would rather have the meter reader in my yard than a util. co. regulating my watt usage!!
