RENO, Nev. (Mynews4.com & KRNV)- The United States of America might seem less united tonight as the number of unhappy voters signing petitions to secede from the union continue to tick up. The petitions happen to be on a White House website. Following every presidential election there is some sort of backlash from those who disagree with the outcome says TMCC Political Science Professor Fred Lokken. "Many were calling it Armageddon.
So far hundreds of thousands of people upset with this year’s results have signed on-line petitions representing more than two dozen states. The petitions are asking to allow their state to "peacefully withdraw from the United States and create its own NEW government." Nevada, although the majority voted in favor of President Obama, is among the petitioning states.
The petitions were created on a White House website overseen by the Obama administration. If you take a closer look at the petition for Nevada, you will see many of the signatures come from other states.
No matter what, the petitions have little merit. Nevada's Constitution, a condition of the state being admitted to the union during the Civil War on October 31, 1864, states that citizens don't have power to "disolve" thier connection to the federal government, which could "employ armed force in compelling obedience to its authority."
Locals were quick to sound off of the petitions. "I think we have to support whoever is elected for President," said one woman. As for the notion of secession, one man told News 4, "Who's going to pay for highways? Who's going to pay for the post offices? I think it is ridiculous."
According to the White House website any petition that receives at least 25,000 signatures in a month will get an official response from the Obama administration. Texas and Louisiana have already reached that number. Texas has more than 80,000 signatures.
