SAN DIEGO (AP) — A newborn hippopotamus has died at the San Diego Zoo.

Zoo officials tell KNSD-TV that staffers found the baby dad during routine observations on Thursday morning, just four days after it was born. The cause of death remains unknown.

Zoo officials say the mother, Funani, is an experienced and attentive mother who kept close watch on the baby, so much so that zookeepers had yet to get near enough to determine the sex of the newborn.

Funani has given birth to five calves since her arrival at the zoo in 1995.

Otis, a male brought to the zoo from Los Angeles in 2009 to breed with Funani, fathered the baby, which had yet to be named.
